Several Heavener football players were recognized when the all-district 2A-6 team was released Wednesday.

Dalton Semore was named the district’s quarterback of the year; Jaxon Armstrong was the wide receiver of the year; and Camden Broyles was the tight end of the year.

Other players named all-district were: PJ Riddley at running back; Jackson Clubb wide receiver; Devry Ritter wide receiver; Jacob Vickers offensive line; Tristan Griffith outside linebacker; and Jerami Casteel JR. on the defensive line.

Heavener High School had its first wrestling matches Tuesday night at Fort Smith Northside against the hosts and the Poteau junior varsity team.

Heavener wrestled Poteau’s JV first, followed by Northside.

Jaxon Armstrong led the way going 2-0 with 2 pins, Alex Armstrong and Kevin Bretado both went 1-1, both winning their matches by pinfall. 

Heavener’s next dual is at Broken Bow Dec. 13.

Heavener senior Kinley Brand signed to play softball with Southern Nazarene out of Bethany Wednesday morning.

Brand was a starter all four years for the Lady Wolves and was the main pitcher for the Lady Wolves the last two seasons in fast pitch.

The Heavener seventh and eighth grade academic team finished second in a district meet Wednesday, which also included Fort Gibson and Stigler.

In Thursday’s weather forecast, Mostly cloudy skies with a chance of rain Thursday in LeFlore County.

The high will be 54 degrees with a low of 44 degrees.

In today’s top stories, More Chinese cities eased some anti-virus restrictions as police patrolled their streets to head off protests Thursday while the ruling Communist Party prepared for the high-profile funeral of late leader Jiang Zemin.

Four lion cubs that were orphaned during the war in Ukraine have arrived safely at a Minnesota animal sanctuary that has pledged to provide them a permanent home.

House Democrats ushered in a new generation of leaders on Wednesday with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries elected to be the first Black American to head a major political party in Congress at a pivotal time as long-serving Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her team step aside next year.

The U.S. House moved urgently to head off the looming nationwide rail strike on Wednesday, passing a bill that would bind companies and workers to a proposed settlement that was reached in September but rejected by some of the 12 unions involved.

The measure passed by a vote of 290-137 and now heads to the Senate. If approved there, it will be signed by President Joe Biden, who urged the Senate to act swiftly.

U.S. officials have approved the first pharmaceutical-grade version of the so-called fecal transplant procedures that doctors have increasingly used against hard-to-treat intestinal infections.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved Rebyota for adults who have trouble fighting off infections with Clostridium difficile, commonly referred to as C. diff, a bacteria that causes nausea, cramping and diarrhea. The infection is particularly dangerous when it reoccurs and is linked to about 15,000 to 30,000 deaths a year.

Oklahoma City didn’t have star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander against San Antonio. Jalen Williams’ spot-on imitation was good enough.

Williams scored a season-high 27 points and the Thunder overcame a 20-point second-half deficit to hand the Spurs their ninth straight loss, 119-111 on Wednesday night.

Gilgeous-Alexander, the league’s No. 3 scorer with 31.1 points per game, sat out with a bruised hip. Williams stepped up, scoring 20 points on 8-for-8 shooting in the second half.

On this date in history, in 1991, Ukrainians voted overwhelmingly for independence from the Soviet Union.

In 1824, the presidential election was turned over to the U.S. House of Representatives when a deadlock developed among John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford and Henry Clay. (Adams ended up the winner.)

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln sent his Second Annual Message to Congress, in which he called for the abolition of slavery, and went on to say, “Fellow-citizens, we can not escape history. We of this Congress and this Administration will be remembered in spite of ourselves.”

In 1941, Japan’s Emperor Hirohito approved waging war against the United States, Britain and the Netherlands after his government rejected U.S. demands contained in the Hull Note.

In 1942, during World War II, nationwide gasoline rationing went into effect in the United States; the goal was not so much to save on gas, but to conserve rubber that was desperately needed for the war effort by reducing the use of tires.

In 1952, the New York Daily News ran a front-page story on Christine Jorgensen’s sex-reassignment surgery with the headline, “Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty”.

In 1955, Rosa Parks, a Black seamstress, was arrested after refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus; the incident sparked a year-long boycott of the buses by Blacks.

In 1965, an airlift of refugees from Cuba to the United States began in which thousands of Cubans were allowed to leave their homeland.

In 1969, the U.S. government held its first draft lottery since World War II.

In 1974, TWA Flight 514, a Washington-bound Boeing 727, crashed in Virginia after being diverted from National Airport to Dulles International Airport; all 92 people on board were killed.

Wolves named to all-district team

Several Heavener football players were recognized when the all-district 2A-6 team was released Wednesday.

Jorge Lira, Brason Davies, Jerami Casteel Jr, and Travis Kincaid all wrestled tough, but couldn’t pick up their first wins. 

Coach Jack Armstrong said the Heavener wrestlers are getting better every day and they are working hard.

Heavener’s next dual is at Broken Bow Dec. 13.

Heavener senior Kinley Brand signed to play softball with Southern Nazarene out of Bethany Wednesday morning.

Brand was a starter all four years for the Lady Wolves and was the main pitcher for the Lady Wolves the last two seasons in fast pitch.

She had a career record of 43-33, including 11-10 with one save this past season. She also had a save with 113 strikeouts with only 29 walks.

Brand also led Heavener at the plate with a .530 average with 20 stolen bases, 31 runs and 13 RBI.

“When I went there, it just felt like home when I went there on my first visit,” said Brand, who did consider a couple of other schools.

Brand said she expects to play outfield at SNU and still pitch some. She plans to major in pre-med in college.

She said SNU was one of the top programs in the nation and enjoyed meeting all the other players.

“It’s been good having her for four years,” said Heavener Coach Rodale Sanders. “She’s really done well for us. We move her to the outfield in slow pitch because she can cover a lot of ground.

“We’re going to miss her. She led us the last two years in batting average.”
