Wister advances to LCJ championship game
POTEAU – Wister advanced to the championship game of the 2021 baseball LeFlore County Tournament with a 9-1 win over Spiro Thursday.
The Wildcats play the winner of Friday’s 4 p.m. game between Spiro and Whitesboro to find out who the opponent will be. The championship game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Both games are at Poteau High School’s field at Town Creek Park.
The “if” game is Saturday at 1 p.m.
Matt Holzhammer threw a two-hitter for Wister and struck out 11 while Tucker Wooten hit a pair of doubles and was 3-4 with six RBI and a run. C.J. Halford had a 2-3 outing for the Wildcats with two runs.
Wister, ranked fourth in Class A, improved to 17-4.
Braden Riggs pitched the first 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and five walks. Dakota Pitchford threw an inning, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, with a walk.
Whitesboro won twice to stay alive. The Bulldogs opened with a 17-15 win over Panama before advancing with a 12-2 victory over Poteau.
Howe won its’ opener over Poteau, 8-6.

Pocola powers past Heavener
POCOLA – Pocola snapped Heavener’s 17-game winning streak with a 15-4 win Thursday.
Pocola improved to 17-5 and is 12th in 4A. Heavener is 19-3 and second in 5A. The Lady Wolves play in the Battiest Tournament Friday against Boswell at 11 a.m.
The game was tied at 4 after two innings before the Lady Indians took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third. Pocola added six more in the fifth to end the game.
Pocola hit seven home runs in the win. Kail Chitwood homered twice and was 3-3 with three runs and two RBI, Kenzie Reid went 3-3 with two runs and a RBI, Mika Scott had a 3-3 outing with three RBI and two runs, Kena Chitwood homered twice and was 2-2 with three RBI and three runs, Emma Damato was 2-3 with a run, Madison Linker doubled and had a 2-3 game with a run, Camryn Harvey was 2-2, Maci Maxwell homered and was 1-3 with two RBI and a run, Kenzie Tucker homered and went 1-3 with a run and a RBI and Kylee Smith homered while going 1-3 with two RBI and a run.
For Heavener, Desinty McGee was 2-3 with a run, McKinley Alexander went 2-3 with a RBI and Cayleigh McGee homered and finished 1-3 with two RBI and a run.
Wister wins twice Thursday
Wister went 2-0 against Webbers Falls and Pittsburg Thursday in slow pitch softball.
The Lady Wildcats improve to 22-6.
Wister won the opener over Webbers Falls, 8-1, before blanking Pittsburg in the second game, 10-0.
Against Webbers Falls, Kinley Branscum homered and doubled in a 2-2 game with two RBI and a run, Kate Hammons doubled and went 2-3 with two RBI and a run and Jordan Makovy finished 2-3 with a run.
In the late game, Wister lashed out 13 hits while Pittsburg only had one. Makovy doubled twice and was 2-2 with a RBI, Kourtney Donaho doubled and went 2-2 with two RBI and a run, Hattie Pate had a 2-2 game with a run, Hope Gotes finished 2-4 with two runs and a RBI, Branscum tripled and was 1-2 with a run, Triniti McCoy tripled and went 1-2 with a RBI and a run and Hammons doubled while going 1-3 with two runs and a RBI.

Howe intern of the week 4-8-2021
HOWE - This week’s Howe intern of the week is Allie Ramsey.
She is a senior at Howe High School. Each day she works two hours as an intern. One hour each day she interns for the high school math instructor, Rodney Nobles and one hour each day she interns for Paloma Wickware, elementary office secretary.
Ramsey has learned how to assist guests and answer the phone with a professional greeting. Filing and running errands are always daily tasks for each supervisor. After graduation, Ramsey plans to attend Carl Albert State College and further her education to obtain a degree in pediatric nursing.

Friday could be a wet day in LeFlore County with the forecast calling for rain showers and thunderstorms.
The best possibility is Friday night when there is a 70 percent chance of precipitation. The high will be 74 degrees with a low of 49 degrees.
Sunrise is at 6:54 with sunset at 7:46 p.m.
Thursday’s high was 79 with a low of 58.
Average temperatures for April 9 are a high of 73 and low of 45. Records for the date were a high of 85 in 1977 and a low of 28 in 1982.

OBITUARIES
Obituary for Sharon Armstrong
Services for Sharon Ann Armstrong, 69, are 2 p.m. Saturday at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau with Keith Stewart officiating.
Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau, under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home.
She was born on Sept. 7, 1951 in Poteau to Hoyt and Betty Jo (Baughman) Armstrong. The Lord called her home on April 1, 2021 in Tulsa.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Hoyt and Betty Jo (Baughman) Armstrong; her sister, Linda Qualls; her brother, Sherman “Bo” Armstrong; and her niece, Ceslianne Armstrong.
Sharon is survived by her son, Scott Armstrong; her daughter, Missy Armstrong; her grandchildren Jace Armstrong-Johnson (Tori Johnson), Morgan Turner, Alexis Armstrong, Erica Armstrong, Daylin Mayes and Trey Sam Mayes; her brother David and wife Rhonda Armstrong; sister Tina and husband Ley Seth; her brother-in-law, Derrell Qualls; and her many nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends.
She graduated Poteau High School class of 1970. She was a member of the Library Club, Office Staff, FHA and she was the Library Club Vice President. She attended two years at Carl Albert Junior College. Sharon grew up in the Poteau area and was known as a loving and compassionate daughter, sister, mother, grandma, aunt and loving friend. Sharon enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, whom she loved unconditionally. She also enjoyed researching her family genealogy and drinking Coca-Cola.
Sharon had a beautiful, contagious smile with a kind heart. She was a hardworking, outgoing, funny and a loving friend that would do anything for anyone. Sharon worked at the Grillette Cafe owned by her mother Betty, and the Poteau Tastee Freeze. She was also well known from the Buckaroo and Watermelons, and later went on to work as a convenience store manager and supervisor.
Pallbearers are Scott Armstrong, Jace Armstrong Johnson, Daylin Mayes, Trey Sam Mayes, David Armstrong, Joe Allen Qualls, Dustin Armstrong and Bryce Armstrong. Honorary pallbearers are Ley Seth, Josh Saddler, Joe Hardy.
Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to The Gideons and/or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in memory of Sharon Ann Armstrong.
